Assisting those impacted by the devastating earthquake in Morocco: Ways to provide support
On the evening of Friday, September 8, 2023, at approximately 11:05 p.m. local time, Morocco experienced a significant earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. This powerful seismic event occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (about twice the cruising altitude of a commercial jet), with its epicenter located in the High Atlas Mountains, approximately 72 kilometers (about half the distance from Washington, D.C. to New York City) southwest of the city of Marrakech, which is home to a population exceeding one million. The impact of this devastating earthquake has extended to numerous nearby villages, with several of them suffering extensive damage within the initial moments of the catastrophe. As we receive updates, the casualty count continues to rise due to subsequent aftershocks, complicating the situation for both victims and rescue teams. In solidarity with those affected, we would like to provide our community with a list of organizations where they can contribute to support relief efforts.
Coping with the Consequences
At the time of composing this article, there have been more than 5,000 injuries and nearly 3,000 fatalities, making this one of the most devastating disasters Morocco has experienced in the last century. These numbers are expected to increase in the coming days as local residents and rescuers work tirelessly to rescue individuals trapped beneath the immense piles of rubble and debris. This mission is exceptionally challenging due to the earthquake's epicenter being closer to rural areas characterized by rugged terrain and inadequate infrastructure to withstand such a powerful natural event. Satellite imagery reveals the destruction of numerous villages, with collapsed structures and impassable roads dominating the landscape. Additionally, even historically significant sites like the 900-year-old Walls of Marrakech have suffered significant damage.
The aftermath of this earthquake is anticipated to have a lasting impact on Morocco. Specialists caution that the process of reconstructing the devastated communities may span several years due to the challenging terrain in the affected regions, compounded by the country's pre-existing economic vulnerabilities. Consequently, this situation will leave thousands of displaced individuals without adequate protection, necessitating urgent aid in the form of clean water, hygiene, healthcare, and shelter. Additionally, UNICEF reports indicate that the earthquake has had a profound effect on over 100,000 children.
Uniting to Provide Assistance
Once more, in times of crisis, there is a willingness from many quarters to extend a helping hand. At this juncture, France has initiated a donation fund, the Israeli government is actively engaged in providing aid, Algeria has reopened its airspace to facilitate humanitarian flights, and Turkey has dispatched rescue teams and tents to the affected area.
It's crucial to keep in mind that we can make a difference by assisting individuals facing a crisis. Below, you'll find a list of organizations you can contribute to, which provide humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the Morocco earthquake.
High Atlas Foundation
The High Atlas Foundation is committed to raising nearly €500,000 to deliver food, water, shelter, and vital items like blankets to those affected by the earthquake. International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies
The International Federation of Red Cross swiftly reacted to the crisis in Morocco, promptly allocating more than $1.1 million from its resources to support the Moroccan Red Crescent Societies. By providing direct assistance to local humanitarian organizations, IFRC ensures that those with the most knowledge of the region are receiving the necessary support to enhance their rescue operations.
