An AI Handbook for Learning and Development

There's an undeniable presence that we can't ignore, much like an elephant in the room. Avoiding the issue won't facilitate the initiation of a conversation. Many of us are pondering the impact of AI on Learning and Development. Achieving objectivity can be a challenging endeavor. Let's begin by delineating what AI is and dispelling misconceptions about it.

An Overview of AI Throughout History

John McCarthy, who initially coined the term, defined Artificial Intelligence as "the field of science and engineering dedicated to creating intelligent machines, particularly intelligent computer programs" in 2007. AI-driven technology has the ability to utilize sensors for meaningful environmental perception, analyze and structure the data it gathers, and autonomously employ that data to formulate predictions and decisions.

The Prospects and Perils of Artificial Intelligence

In a different well-liked television series, an episode features the main character, Michael, being ensnared within an artificial cell generated by artificial intelligence. The dilemma arises because of an ongoing war, with the AI channeling its resources to keep her alive inside the cell, even though her demise appears inevitable. She engages in a heated discussion with the AI about finding a more favorable alternative instead of merely waiting for certain death. Eventually, a consensus is reached, and the AI decides to set her free, deeming it the most optimal means of preserving her life.

It is in that instance that I realized AI can be a perfect partner and maybe less of a master. At an expert level, it may be easy to draw conclusions from AI-generated scenarios, something that may be less so at a novice level. This draws deeper conversations including the conundrum of having AI as a public good or using it at an expert level.

Artificial Intelligence and the Field of Learning and Development

Pedagogy and andragogy consider three key aspects: the content and instructional materials, the learner, and the training objectives. These aspects exhibit a complex interplay of independence and interdependence. This implies that optimizing one aspect does not guarantee success in the others, but effective preparation of all three facets is essential for success. Artificial intelligence can serve as a valuable addition to any of these aspects and has the potential to significantly enhance the development of personalized training, an area where both pedagogy and andragogy encounter challenges.

Learning and Development represents a complex field where the influence of AI is not only possible but necessary. Despite this, the role of Learning and Development specialists remains in the process of full realization. In a rapidly changing world, particularly in the business landscape with the ongoing growth of startups, L&D specialists must continue to support and guide these diverse groups. The traditional perception of L&D solely as an HR function is likely to evolve into a more departmental role, which is poised to enhance efficiency and productivity. However, as AI continues to advance, L&D specialists will persist in providing instructional materials with context and significance.

Final Thoughts: AI's Impact on the Global Landscape

It's quite intriguing to inquire about the specific applications learning specialists envision for generative AI. Nevertheless, our focus should be directed towards identifying particular domains where generative AI can yield significant benefits, with the hope of developing innovative solutions in the days to come.

Much like a growing child, we can anticipate significant transformations in various aspects, including the economic and political realms, and perhaps even more subtly, in all spheres. The real challenge lies in the event of a profound shift in perspectives, which could potentially lead to a system resembling an 'oracle.' In such a scenario, adopting rules of engagement would likely be a prudent step. Perhaps we should inquire with emerging AI, akin to a curious child, about its vision for its future development. This way, we can equip ourselves for its eventual maturity.
